I prayed as through the night they passed over,
Those angles of death with their hiccupping drone
How I prayed as I sat and listened as they passed over
And tried, tried to make my mind blank to those who died instead of me.
Where they did not pass over
To those who in my prayers I had asked to die, instead of me
Whose only headstone was the rubble that had been their home.
